Taxi driver is given award

Thursday, May 08, 2008

The PSNI has awarded a certificate to a Belfast taxi driver for the bravery he showed in assisting a woman during an attempted robbery last year.

Last November, taxi driver Billy Scott spotted a man attempting to rob American exchange student Paige Ishmael and stopped his car on University Road in south Belfast. Mr Scott immediately went to the student’s assistance. He managed to push the assailant away and retrieve her handbag. After the incident he escorted Paige and her friend back to their student accommodation.

The perpetrator ran off and was later arrested and charged by police.

Paige described Mr Scott as a “wonderful man”.

“He provided valuable assistance in what could have been a very dangerous situation and I am very grateful to him for that,” she said.
