The Time Out guide said Strangford Lough was an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which was 'blissfully free of tourism'
Strangford Lough is officially one of the top 20 best weekend break destinations in Great Britain and Ireland according to a prestigious guide.
Time Out guide was full of praise for Strangford Lough which it described as “an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (which) is nonetheless blissfully free of tourism”.
“Instead, vast populations of migrant birds visit the large shimmering sand flats of its northern shores, while yachts and pleasure craft enjoy the challenges of this large intertidal playground, dotted with islands and natural harbours,” the guide said.
“Characterised by its unique drumlins — soft, undulating hills created by Ice Age glaciers — its shore is also defined by mature woodland, splendid stone-walled estates, pretty villages and sheep-strewn farmland,” it added.
Ards councillor Simon Hamilton welcomed the inclusion and said: “It would seem that word is spreading about the wonderful visitor experience we have on our doorstep.
“For Strangford Lough to be included in a list of the 20 best weekend break destinations in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland is perhaps no surprise to those us who get to appreciate its wonderful attractions every day of the week, but it appears that word about our area is getting out to much further afield.
“Whenever a renowned and reputable company like Time Out includes Strangford Lough in one of its guidebooks it really is a ringing endorsement for this area.
“I am sure that our area and those attractions and businesses listed in the guidebook will benefit from this significant seal of approval from Time Out.”
The Time Out guide also commented on Strangford Lough's unique history and that “the exceptionally mild and sunny microclimate allows palm trees to grow in even the most exposed areas, so you can enjoy a long season of outdoor activities”.
“Don't forget an Ordnance Survey map, wellies, a pair of binoculars and swimming togs,” he concluded.
