A former Bangor schoolgirl has started a search for past friends who posed for a photograph 60 years ago.

Joan Smyth is trying to locate all the people who are in the Bangor Collegiate School photograph which was taken in 1948.

The 72-year-old said she is hopeful that there are still a number of past classmates who live in Northern Ireland who would be able to get in touch.

“There may be quite a few ‘old girls’ still around who may not have had the opportunity to see this bit of Bangor Collegiate School history,” she said.

“I would just like people to have a good look at the picture and ask themselves, ‘were you there, might you be in this photograph’?

“My memories of school were wonderful. It would be great to meet other former pupils and have a chat.

“A lot of pupils travelled from throughout the town as well as Holywood to go there,” she added.

“We have already got the names of quite a few people in the photograph, but it would be great to get in contact, or at least put names to faces for the remaining pupils.”

Joan says she still remembers the day the photograph in 1948 was taken.

“What a grand day that was. Carting the chairs and benches down the sleep slope from the school to the area in front of Pickie Pool.

“Then making sure our smile will still be in place, when the ‘moving’ camera faced our position in the semi-circle.

“I would just say to anyone who went to Bangor Collegiate, do contact us for a chat or come and see the original photograph and list of names, or perhaps arrange the occasional class meet ups in the future.”

A decision was taken in 1957 to merge Bangor Collegiate with Glenlola School in Bangor.

And Glenlola Collegiate opened its new amalgamated doors in 1963.
